A good start to the season helped by a default on board 2 and a fair slice of luck.
Some good luck on board 1, we had been winning easily early in the game,
but had let the win slip, then a blunder let the draw slip. At this point
the Barnet player offered a draw in a simple winning king & pawn ending.
We were also lucky on board 4 when the Barnet player failed to make the time
control, apparently not helped by neglecting to press his clock.
Rod's game reached the predictable rook & pawn ending and was drawn.

Not the best start to the season, but all things considered we did well
to come close. To avoid a trip to Royston, two of the first team had
arranged trips out of the Country, and in the end only one of the
nominated first team played.
Promoted to board 1, Phil had a good win, this gave us hope of a shock
result.
My game seemed to be reasonably even until the center got blocked and I
realised I had a simple winning plan. Unfortuneately at the same time my
opponent saw the same plan, and was forced into a do-or-die pawn push which
opened his own kings position. Just as I thought I was about to win I
blundered a pawn and was lucky to escape with a draw.
On board 3 Adrian compromised his position trying to get an
advantage, leaving a very difficult defense.
With the black pieces Philip never seemed to have any problems and had
a solid draw.
This just leaves board 5 where under normal circumstances Adrian with
white and outgrading his opponent would expect a result. But Adrian ran
short of time and lost in a complex game. This is was almost totally
due to the fact he took the train to Royston and had wrote the address
down, but had missed two vital letters "St" off the end of Melbourn. He
asked someone at Royston station if he was at the right place for
Melbourn Royston, and they sent him to the next station up the line to
Melbourn. So instead of being half an hour early he was 45 minutes late,
after not finding the club at Melbourn.

A first team 5-0 whitewash, the first time for 15 seasons!
The top 4 games were closely contested, only Philip dominating the whole game.
Matthew had all the attacking chances and eventually the opponents defence
lapsed leading to the king being caught in the center.
Howard won material in the middle game only to be suprised at the opponents
counterplay and was slightly fortuneate that time trouble cane to the rescue.
I got my bad move in earlier than usual at move 2.
Although things didn't seem as bad as I expected, it certainly helped when my
opponent left his king in the middle and grabbed a hot pawn.
A rook sacrifice concluded the game.
Meanwhile, on 5 Philip had totally overwelmed his opponent with a new found
attacking streak and commented that "it's not chess" - seems to work though.

The second division is very competitive this season, and it's difficult
to pick the winners and losers at this stage, so it was nice to win a second
match without too many alarms.
On 1 the Hertford player chose to avoid main line Grunfeld theory and paid
the price, getting a piece trapped in a difficult position.
On board 2 Adrian, having travelled a distance, was offered a draw after only
a few moves. He understandably declined the offer but made no headway, only
to find after the game he had missed a winning plan just before the game was
drawn.
Rod headed for his familar rook & pawn ending, same conclusion.
John playing his first match for the club probably was wishing he'd stayed at
home, after a disastrous opening he had to sit and suffer while he was beaten
up - things can only get better.

A third straight win!
Lucky on board 1 after a bad second move, which almost led to a quick defeat.
Philip again played aggressively but could not quite capitalise and had some
luck in reaching a drawn adjourned position.
This time Rod crucially kept a minor piece to go with his rook and won.

Facing a tough Watford side the captain managed to escape playing the same
opponent on sucessive nights by opting out. With the presure off I could
enjoy some 5 minute games over a nice pint of beer.
Matthew had a disaster, playing against a dodgy gambit he overlooked a tactic.
John playing his first game for a while, won very convincingly with black
against a strong opponent.
Very unusually Howard played a poor game, and later admitted that he just
couldn't find any good moves.
The Bonafont-Boyce theoretical Sicilian Najdorf dual continued, this time Phil
has managed to keep the upper hand through to the adjournment.
Although he missed an easier way of winning just before the end,
Phil has all the chances.
Andrew played a very nice game, his opponent sacrificed a piece for a number
of pawns but neglected king safety. Andrew kept up the pressure and the
defence enventually colapsed.
Phil failed to win a tricky queen & pawn endgame, laeving a drawn match.

Hertford continue to roll out the same team time and time again so their
board order was no suprise.
Matthew run into some opening preperation.
Andrew's game was rather difficult to assess, he had two bishops and two rooks
against two knights and two rooks. Andrew was a pawn down but had potential,
he eventually won the pawn back but lost the potential. The game was adjourned
with Andrew a pawn down in a rook & pawn ending but he did have a passed pawn.
The opponent offered the draw.
My opponent played a rather dubious opening, and couldn't handle the piece
sacrifices, hopefully he might like to try to improve this opening next time.
Howard converted his adjournment advantage by a very neat exchange sacrifice.
Phil admitted that his sealed move was not quite the best, a very complicated
knight ending was made more difficult. In the end he came within 1 tempo of
holding the draw.
Still a drawn match keeps us in with a chance.

Another victory.
Steve had some advantage from the opening but then played a few bad moves and
was lucky to have a slight edge an the end of the session.
This was not enough to force my opponent to travel.
Paul adjourned position has been sent for adjudication, claiming a win.
A double rook & pawn ending with a pawn on the 7th.
Adrian reached the adjourned position with 2 possible sealed moves both won
easily. Although the opposition have claimed the game on a technical
infringement of the '7-day rule'.
Not a typical Rod game, he looked in serious trouble, but the complications
baffled his opponent who couldn't find the correct moves.
John had a straight forward win, although a quick look revealed an even game,
closer inspection revealed an extra piece.
Paul's position was adjudicated a draw.

Outgrading the opposition by such a large margin is often a recipe for disaster.
This turned out to be our luckiest result so far.
Matthew always seemed to have a even position but late in the game, after a
couple of draw offers he pressed too hard for the win. Although by this stage
the team was clearly winning the match.
John seemed to be clearly better heading into the endgame and started rounding
up pawns. The position was in fact lost and as his opponent was in the process
of making the winning pawn push he lost on time.
Howards game was the most comfortable a small edge and eventual break through to
the king.
Phil on the black side of another Sicilain, was forced into e5 leaving a weak
d5 square. He then attempted to trap a piece on the queenside. This backfired
but a similar idea a few moves later did net a piece.
My game was best forgotten, my opponent with black was completely even by move
10 and could have been justified in offering a draw. He then gave me slight
hope in allowing a pawn push against his king. This got nowhere except luring
my king into what should have been a fatal pin. Luckly my opponent missed it
and dropped a pawn. This led to what I thought was an easy win, but even this
turned out to be difficult. By the adjounment I did have a winning plan,
although even this could and should have been tested.
Not title winning form, as the 4-1 win could have certainly been much worse.

The main excitement for the spectators was the game on board 5, it was almost impossible to predict the outcome. The tension mounted after all the other games had finished, both players had their chances in a very open game. The game was being played to a finish and as the time reduced Ken missed several chances to secure victory. Towards the end the opponents king slipped away to safety. The final position was unclear but the clock had the final say.
