Match Reports

HH4 vs Royston 3 (H) - 4th October 2004

Rob Johnson reports:

Hemel get off to a good start with a victory in the first game of the new season.

Paul S went a bit astray in the opening. His opponent developed quickly and sacrificed a bishop on f7 to keep Paul's king in the middle. Paul resigned a few moves later faced with a forced loss of material. Bob faced a queen's gambit which he declined. There was parity for most of the game and with the centre of the board closed with locked pawns a draw was agreed.

Paul C had his queen's gambit accepted. His opponent rashly went on the attack storming just about all of his pawns down the board whilst leaving his king uncastled. Paul won the exchange of rook for bishop but was way down on time while his opponent was playing blitz chess. With his flag about to fall, Paul was able to take advantage of the exposed enemy king and open board, delivering checkmate with queen and rook on the back rank.

Rob faced a Petroff defence to his e4. The game was even throughout and after about 35 moves a draw was agreed with queens and rooks still on the board. Attention then turned to the deciding game with Andy Walker on board three. In an interesting open middle game, Andy had a queen and rook versus two rooks and a bishop. Andy though had two monster connected passed pawns in the middle of the board which he promoted, forcing the demise of the opposing rooks which effectively ended the game. His opponent persevered though until his king was trapped on the side of the board, faced with imminent checkmate he resigned.

The final result 3-2 to Hemel.

HH2 vs Letchworth 1 (H) - 4th October 2004

Adrian Matthews reports:

The season got off to a great start witha win against Letchworth. Our opponenets arrived witha slightly weakened team but on paper the match was going to be very close. I lost the toss and they predictable close white on odd boards. Top board was first to finish, when Phil's opponent offered him a draw, which he accepted. Rod had an 'off day' and went down. Steve, with his leg in plaster, played a useful junior and was held to a draw.

My game was fairly even until my opponent blundered a pawn, which I duly converted into a win. Tom sealed the points for Hemel with a good win against a useful opponent (who had defeated me last season).

1. P Gregory (155) ½ - ½ A Burrows (151)

HH1 vs Welwyn Hatfield 1 (A) - 5th October 2004

Steve Law reports:

After arriving at the opponents new venue a bit late, well how was I to know the Railway station was in the midlle of a shopping centre, it appeared we were playing in the bar - it was closed off when play began.

The opponents had a strong team although they were at least one player short so we were in with a chance. Early signs weren't bad, boards 1-3 all looked at least even, Andrew had 'won' the exchange but had a queen in trouble which I couldn't see an escape for, my game was looking good. Not much change for the next couple of hours, although at one point our travelling supporters club nearly fell asleep, no the games weren't boring it was just very hot.

Matthew was first to finish, after having a small advantage for most of the game, all still well on 2 and 3, although by now Andrew's queen was about to be lost and my game had drifted which I thought might be lost. Andrew duly succumbed and very close to the time control John had just lost a piece, Howard was still ok, and I had a perpetual check for the taking but could see only ways to lose if I declined it.

So at adjounment we were 1-2 down with a probable loss on 2 and what at first glance looked a draw on 3, and although Howard did 'agree' a draw it did seem he was certainly better and also that John's game was not as clear as it appeared. What was even more annoying was after further reflection I could have played on and had very good chances of winning.

After reflection John's was not worth playing on a piece down.

HH1 vs Watford 1 (H) - 18th October 2004

Steve Law reports:

We were greeted by a below strength Watford team, although their new board 2 makes them a good bet to retain the league title even at this early stage.

All the games were pretty even until just after Philip(G) and then Matthew agreed draws, when for a change things took a very positive turn on 3 and 4. Philip(B) had been gradually improving his position and was just starting to line up an attack, when my opponent had lost first one pawn and then sacrificed a second and was left to defend a fairly lost cause. Just at the right time Philip had a neat win of a piece which if recaptured would have led to mate, the only problem was that although a piece up he had 2 under attack, next time I looked over and he had given one of the pieces back but had secured 2 pawns and could now coast to victory.

My opponent shortly resigned and a likely team win looked on the cards, what I had failed to consider was that Philip was playing a quick-play finish and although he had material advantage forcing a win in the time was not easy, as the time diminished so did his winning and then drawing chances. So we reached adjournment 2-2 with one game left.

Howard had won a pawn allowing some counter play but had defended well and now had a chance to play for a win. Hopefully we may win the match but have the draw in hand, not bad but again we had chances but let them go. ... later... Howard agreed a draw after seeing he could make no progress.

HH3 vs Hertford 4 (H) - 18th October 2004

HH3 vs Barnet Elizabethans 2 (A) - 25th October 2004

Tom Rixon, Paul Sargent and Steve Weston report:

Barnet fielded an ineligible player so final result was 2½-1½ to Hemel.

Even though the team lost against Barnet Elizabethans, it was subsequently discovered that they were playing an unregistered player, and hence the scoreline reversed and Hemel given a win.

HH2 vs Watford 3 (A) - 26th October 2004

Adrian Matthews reports:

After a good start to the season, the 2nd team slipped up against newly promoted Watford 3. On paper, we were the stronger side but were narrowly defeated. Hector, playing in his first match of the season & no doubt a little rusty, was the first to finish. He lost to a Benko Gambit. I was next to finish, offering my opponent a draw when short of time, in what was then a fairly even position. Steve's game was a sharp Nadjorf Sicilian, which he was winning & about to mate his opponent, but chose the wrong sequence of moves & eventually lost. Ian, a late replacement, was our star player, beating higher rated opposition. With a space advantage & doubled rookson a central file, Ian then subsequently forced resignation from his opponent. This meant Rod had to win his game for us to draw the match.Unfortunately, the position looked a little blocked when I saw it & a draw was the likely outcome. Rod's draw was against an opponent who has been rated a lot higher previously.

HH2 vs Stevenage 1 (H) - 8th November 2004

Steve Weston & Adrian Matthews report:

On paper, this was going to be a close match & that's how it turned out.

Rod was first to finish, chalking up a quickish win. During my game, I couldn't help help but notice what was happening on Board 1. Steve's opponent played the Patzer Variation of the Centre Counter 1.e4 d5 2.exd5 Qxd5 3.Nc3 Qe5+. This is not so stupid as it looks & can transpose back to the main line but with White's Bishop being on Be2, if White uses his bishop to parry the check.

Steve Law came out of the opening ok but was eventually defeated. I didn't see any of Steve Weston's game but he drew with white. Hector's game has gone to adjudication. He is a pawn down but with still a lot of play left, he may get a draw.

My game was an interesting Sicilian, which followed theory for about 20 moves, unknown to me. Unfortunately, in the time scrabble, I didn't capture a pawn that I should have. Therefore, in the final position, my opponent got me to travel to Stevenage but I was able to hold the ending, when I sacrificed my bishop for two pawns leaving a Rook & Knight versus Rook ending. The match rests with Hector's adjudicated game.

HH3 vs Bishop Stortford 1 (H) - 15th November 2004

Ian had a quick win but the other games went the full distance with Nigel agreeing a draw.

Bishop Stortford's first defeat in 18 months.

HH1 vs Hertford 1 (A) - 16th November 2004

Steve Law reports:

The Hertford team had no suprises in the line up, we were missing Matthew who had just returned from playing in the World Youth under 16 tournament in Cyprus and in an almost repeat of last seasons match Andrew had missed the train and was going to be 'late'. With 4 matches well under way and all about even Andrew arrived about 45 minutes down no the clock and proceeded to bash out several moves and soon had an even game albeit with the usual prospect of a time scramble.

The Philip's both seem to be get the better of the positions in the middle game although this was offset by my game looking dubious and Andrew's growing time shortage. Andrew duly lost on time in a losing position brought on by too much thought on his part, but by now I had an advantage and at one point I could have won an exchange but played 2 moves in the wrong order and was left a pawn down but in a totally drawn position. Here my opponent set a trap which even if I missed it I had a 50-50 chance of avoiding, but as usual..., so we were 2 down with all the other games no better than even.

The adjourned games are very unlikely to give us more than draws, Howard has a rook and pawn ending which although slightly worse should be drawable, Phil (B) is worse but may hold and Philip (G) is slightly better but this might just be an illusion.

The 3 outstanding games all resulted in draws, Philip(G) agreed a draw without continuing but both Phil (B) and Howard played very well in the second session. Phil had the advantage of sealing, which in this case made it difficult for the opponent to analysis all the possible choices, even so he was a pawn down with his king trapped in the corner but seemed to draw with some ease. Howard's position was much more difficult to hold, although almost certainly it was a technically drawn rook and pawn ending he was up against a far stronger opponent in a position where a single slip could have lost, after a further 2 hours of play a totally drawn position was reached.

1. S Knott (217) ½ - ½ H Tebbs (176)
2 S Swanson (201) ½ - ½ P Bonafont (172)

HH2 vs Hoddesdon 1 (A) - 18th November 2004

Adrian Matthews reports:

This was always going to be a tough match, with their lowest rated player being a mere 150. Unfortunately, my train ran very late & when I arrived at the venue, I had lost 25 mins. However, I was pleased to see the team all there & Steve Law already looked like he had a winning position. He did win but I then lost. This was unfortunate, because my opponent had now used as must time as me, but I blundered in an even looking position.

Steve Weston game was then adjourned, but he stood better. Rod's game went into an B v Knight endgame, which looked even & the players agreed a draw, which was a great result for Rod against a strong opponent. Nigel, a late replacement, played a good game to hold out for a draw. The match rested on the adjourned game but Steve has now informed me that his opponent resigned the game.

Hoddesdon played a strange looking board order, with Rod playing there highest rated player - but we are not complaining ! A great result.

1. D Allen (158) 0 - 1 S Law (166)

HH vs Letchworth (H) - Sharp Trophy - 22nd November 2004

Nigel Hoddinott & Paul Sargent report:

Late November, 1st round of the cup. It could easily have been an insipid affair had the away team not been 'up for it'! But when their captain raised his voice to castigate a team mate for not 'fighting to the death', a close battle was inevitable.

Captain Ian lead from the front with an exciting early demolition of his dazed opponent. (1-0) Unfortunately Tom, playing one board up paid the price for watching the game to his left. (1-1) Meanwhile, Barry 'Houdini' Saunders after returning from Hertford with an unsuspected draw, sadly had to kiss this one goodbye. (1-2)

Rod and his opponent seemed to have reached the endgame after about 10mins as they thrashed out the moves in lightning speed. 2hrs later they were still at it. Class told in the end with Rod outmanoeuvring his opponent. (2-2) I struggled to hold parity in my game and was relieved when he offered me the draw. (2.5-2.5)

That left Steve, with a slightly better position entering the time scramble. He held his nerve while his opponents game disintegrated. (3.5-2.5)

The reward, a trip to either Hoddesdon or B Stortford in the next round. What price victory?

HH1 vs St Albans 1 (H) - 29th November 2004

Steve Law reports:

On paper a very even match and the likelihood of the result been decided by a time scramble on board 4.

As the match progressed it became clear that Matthew was well in control and I had a slight advantage no 5, the other games were fairly even the only complicated position was Howard's. Matthew won half way through the session and about the same time my opponent started playing some dubious moves and landed himself in trouble and losing.

In the mean time Philip had agreed a draw securing a point in the match. Of the other games Howard's still looked complex and Andrew was a pawn up and looked to be winning and with no prospect of having to play 10 moves in 2 minutes. At the time control Andrew very generously agreed a draw to 'win' the match, even though he looked to be clearly winning, this was soon followed by a draw on board 2.

So a very rare occurance both the captain and team win.

HH1 vs Royston 1 (A) - 13th December 2004

Steve Law reports:

Being our furthest venue of course we all decided to travel seperately, at least in one direction. Things were not looking good as I had the phone call all captains dread, 6.50pm ... ring ring .. ring ring ... (hears familiar noise at other end which is obviously a station) "Hi it's Andrew ... I've just missed the train, I'm going to be late". Not as bad as it could be as the train arrived at Royston at 7.49, on arrival the match is just under way and the rest of the team present.

After I had played just a few moves Philip G was already fast approaching the ending with a bad pawn structure but with the opponents pieces tied up ... looked to be drawn ... although it later transpires that Philip was better and felt he was winning.

Boards 1 and 2 looked even, Andrew's could go either way, mine a bit dodgy due to the opening being slightly iffy. Things started to slip half way through the evening when Philip B's position suddenly turned from a certain draw, to a loss in just a few moves when he allowed a passed pawn which was unstoppable. Meanwhile my game was looking gloomy and Andrews was unclear ... "over ambitious" was the later diagnosis, still we still had some chances.

Howard's opponent made a bad blunder due to consistent pressure, this was negated by my resignation, shortly followed by both Andrew and Philip G resigning. Not a good result for us, although Royston reported that it may have been their only victory during 2004. So after 5 games we have, 1 win, 1 draw and 3 loses, still we do have Watford 2 to play twice.

HH vs Watford - Russell Trophy (A) - 25th January 2005

Steve Law reports:

Right from the beginning it had all the makings of a 3-3 draw with 6 wins for white, and hence a loss on board count. I thought the best chance of a change was on boards 5 & 6, although Andrew was under a king side attack he was a piece up at one stage so if the attack had failed ... but it didn't. I never had much advantage in my game, although I did think I would win eventually, but my opponent defended very well and although I appeared much better in the bishop v knight endgame it was a bit of an illusion.

John Sharp reports:

We had a strong team and they had a weaker team than normal (missing IM Gwaze and Stone) so overall the teams were fairly evenly matched, with Watford better on paper. Matthew's opponent played a quiet line against his Siclian and although Matthew tried to bring some excitement into the position, all it ended up doing was giving his opponent the advantage and then the game.

I played Jerry Rudge and we followed our normal sort of game where I got into a slightly dodgy position but this time Jerry didn't find the required pawn move and he ended up with some weak pawns and little time. After I made some subtle positional moves (ie messing around until he had no time left) black lost his way and I managed to crash through ending in an actual checkmate.

Of the other games I didn't see too much and I hope I've got the results correct. Howard had a difficult game which he couldn't hold, whereas Phil had a massive passed pawn which must have brought bacon home. Andy lost under a series of sacrifices while Steve agreed a draw (probably slightly better from what I had seen) since we had lost the match on board count anyway.

HH1 vs Welwyn Hatfield 1 (H) - 31st January 2005

Steve Law reports:

Part 1

When the opponents arrived we were met by a surprisingly weak team which included 3 of their second team players, this meant we out graded them heavily on the bottom 3 boards. After this things went downhill, lost the toss, an insipid performance, and we face another certain loss.

Matthew on board 1 had an off day and always seemed to be worse and lost quickly, this was only matched by Philip on 5 achieving nothing other than absolute equality and agreeing a draw. On board 4 against an opponent who had beaten me last time, I had got a good position from the opening, sacrificed a pawn, got no compensation and a bad position, at this point my opponent missed a couple of certain wins and gradually drifted into a lost adjourned endgame.

Andrew's game was I thought a banker, he appeared to have a reasonable position plenty of time left himself but very little for his opponent, but at adjournment I was surprised to see he'd resigned, apparently losing a rook. The one good game was Phil on 2 who was playing a much higher graded opponent, he looked to be better most of the game and has adjourned into a slightly worse but probable draw rook ending.

Bring on the next team, it can only get better.

Part 2

Both the adjourned games were played to a finish, and ended in remarkably similar fashion. Phil had what he considered a slightly worse rook and pawn ending, but if played accurately would be drawn. I had what appeared to be excellent winning chances which after an early exchange of bishops was also a rook and pawn ending a pawn up. From there on the games started to go in different directions, Phil played accurately but his opponent made a bit of a mess of his side and was soon in some trouble, my game was also going to plan and I had 'calculated' rook sacrifice and a winning connected passed pawn ending. I then almost spoiled the night by playing a drawing/losing king move, a case of right idea wrong direction, meanwhile Phil was about to pinch my idea, rook sacrifice for advanced pawn leaving connected passed pawns to win against the opponents rook and without any chances of messing it up. Fortunately at the critical point my opponent won the rook but lost the game, had he chosen one of two alternatives I would have been forced to find some very difficult moves, one of which could have led to four queen ending.

So two wins results in a drawn match, this could cost WGC the league title.

HH2 vs St Albans 2 (H) - 14th February 2005

Adrian Matthews reports:

This was always going to be a tough match against the league leaders. The match got off to a good start when I won the toss and we got white on the odd boards. I didn't get chance to see much of the other boards, except board 1 where the other Adrian had built up a good position. Tom's game looked interesting and he looked better materially but his position looked dubious and he finally went down. Steve also lost against good opposition. Adrian E was able to convert his better position into a win leaving the score at 3-1 for St Albans. It looked like my opponent was going to play on when the adjournment was reached but being the exchange and a pawn down decided not to seal a move and resigned leaving the score at 3-2 to St Albans. The match loss was slightly disappointing.

HH1 vs Watford 1 (A) - 15th February 2005

Steve Law reports:

The story is a familiar tale, only it started earlier than usual, 4.30 pm ... ring ring ... ring ring, "hello I'm going to have trouble getting away from work, if I get there I'll be late". I'll save naming the culprit, except as a hint I must remember to 'warn idling fella'. Never mind we normally have a traveling supporter who could fill in, but of course he choose this night to be playing for another club.

With the possibility of a being a player short it was important not to give any silly points away, step in the captain who took this opportunity to play a classic, managing to lose in 9 moves after just half an hour.

From this point on the rest of the team almost picked up the pieces, the other games all remained even until towards the time control when Adrian, playing his first game for the team, gained a big advantage and swapped off into a rook and pawn ending 2 pawns ahead. After sealing and briefly looking at the position the game was resigned 1-2. Phil had rook and pawn for bishop and knight for some time and having swapped off all the other pieces the game was adjourned, probably drawn. Later this was agreed.

This just left Howard, who had to withstand some early middle game pressure then conjured an attack, but with both players spending time to find their moves a time scramble ensued. Several moves were bashed out and it appeared that each side missed wins. Although the adjourned position had promise, with the opponents king very exposed a forced sequence of moves seemed to indicate a draw, which was duly agreed later in the week.

So once again we faced below strength opposition, and once again we couldn't take advantage.

HH1 vs Watford 2 (H) - 21st February 2005

Steve Law reports:

The first must win match of the season, was met with the familiar problem of a lack of a full team. I was relying on one of 2 players as a fall back, but as luck would have it they both chose the same night to be unavailable, one of whom was Steve Weston who had been asked to play for another club and then found that his opponent didn't show. Fortunately the Watford board 5 took his win and went home and was not too upset, but that meant we were 0-1 from the start.

On board 4 I was faced by the same opponent within a few weeks and once again he gave me no chances and the game remained completely even and I had no option but to accept his draw offer. Just before my half, Andrew had found a very neat rook sacrifice to force a mate. Although he had held the advantage for most of the game, and it was probably just a matter of time before he broke through, even so it was nice to get the point early as it meant we were level.

Phil had defended with a highly theoretical line of the Sicilian Najdorf, where one mistake on blacks part can be disastrous, but if he can play out the complications black has good chances ... but the one mistake came. On board 1 Howard had what could be described as an up and down game, luckily the last up has left him with a pawn advantage and a good chance of winning the adjournment and securing a point.

Howard could only draw his adjourned game, which although he did have winning chances proved a more difficult position than anticipated, and his opponent was able to create enough counter chances. This means we lose the match 2-3

HH2 vs Watford 3 (H) - 28th February 2005

Adrian Matthews report:

Before the start of this match, I had high hopes of a win. That slightly changed when I lost the toss & they chose White on the odds.

Steve Weston finished early drawing with Black...so not a bad start. Board 1 & 2 finished roughly the same time, with Adrian Elwin winning from an inferior position, keeping his good Hemel run going. Not sure what happened with Philip Gregory's game. His Kings Indian Defence position seem to be OK but obviously fell into difficulty. When I looked across at Rod's game he was a Rook for a few pawns up & duly converted it into a win. My game finished with errors from both sides but I was lucky enough to spot a winning line when both players were very short of time.

So a good win & revenge for a loss against this team earlier on in the season.

HH1 vs Hertford 1 (H) - 7th March 2005

Steve Law reports:

The strange Hemel board order was not so much punishment as a lack of confidence in the captains ability to produce a team. I was worried that when Phil was late he might have forgotten the match or was on holiday, of course the very second the clocks were started he arrived. The match looked to have all the makings of a tight result, and after an hour all games were still in the balance.

The first signs of change were in Andrews game, he was a pawn down but had two potentially strong bishops and an attack against the king brewing, against this, his opponent had a off-side knight and a pair of passive rooks. Once the positioned opened the opponents king was soon in trouble and was skewered by rooks and bishops. Phil also looked to have very good winning chances in a complex middle game, but in the sort of position where a slight slip could mean disaster. At the critical moment Phil's opponent overlooked a move which won a queen for rook, and although the game continued to the end of session the was no doubt the result.

In my game I always had a very slight edge with my opponent having a very bad bishop for the second time this season, but he defended carefully and by the time control had an almost even game. The adjourned position is probably drawn. Matthew had defended a passive position albeit slightly worse for all the game, but with no pawn exchanges it was going to be difficult to break down. In fact in the adjourned position all 16 pawns remain with only one possible way of breaking though, so the betting is on a draw.

Howard had a complex maneuvering game, and at one stage I thought he was in trouble. The adjourned position is still very complex, but any minuses in Howards position are more than offset by his very active rook and queen. It is the type of position where anticipating the opponents moves is difficult, so the game could still go either way and may turn on the first few moves after the time control. So far alls well.

All three of the adjourned games were agreed draws without continuing. Although the adjourned positions were all objectively drawn it was still surprising that the Hertford players declined to attempt to salvage the match. This leave us with a 3½-1½ victory.

HH2 vs Stevenage 1 (A) - 14th March 2005

Adrian Matthews reports:

The match against Stevenage who are 2nd in the table & undefeated turned out to be very close. Unfortunately, I was delayed at work, missed the train & wasn't there for the start. We lost the toss & had black on the odd boards.

Steve Weston finished first & was a number of pawns up, going into a R & P ending - so a good start. Stevenage them levelled things when (the battle of the 4NCL - FCA Solutions players) went to Majer.

The remaining games are still undecided. Philip Gregory is worse & probably lost - his opponent started to generate some meaningful threats towards the end of the game. Rod's game looks drawn to me, which finished as a Rook & opposite coloured Bishop plus numerous pawns. I thought Rod was winning for most of the game but I might have over estimated his advantage. After playing 35 moves in 18 minutes, I made the time control & had a couple of extra minutes than my opponent, when the time control was reached. I managed to win a pawn late on in the game & hope to win the game to probably level the match.

HH1 vs St Albans 1 (A) - 21st March 2005

Steve Law reports:

On paper a close match in prospect, but yet again we were dogged by player unavailability, fortunately Steve Weston stepped in at the last minute to avoid another default. During the first half and hour of the match the heating was on full blast and a number of players 'suffered' and did not wake up until it was finally switched off, best to get the excuses out of the way at the start.

Howard said that he did not start playing until his position was difficult, at first I thought his pawn sacrifice was only temporary but then saw a recapture would lose a rook for bishop. From then on it was always just a matter of time and technique, and the result was never really in doubt.

At the other end of the table super-sub was definitely having the better side of a Sicilian Dragon in spite of being out grading by almost 50 points. In fact had Steve had a few more minutes to reach the time control he would have certainly played on and won the exchange, and almost certainly the game. Still a draw was a good result and kept us in the match.

Phil obtained a very nice position from the opening and then with the aid of a pawn sacrifice got his rooks rolling down the open queen-side files. His opponent somehow made the first time control without capitulating, but Phil still had all the play and exchanged several pieces to reach the adjournment with a winning queen and pawn ending.

His opponent somehow made the first time control without capitulating, but Phil still had all the play and exchanged several pieces to reach the adjournment with a winning queen and pawn ending.

Adrian's game looked to be well balanced for most of the game, much of the time a mass of pieces and pawns were all locked together, in fact it was very difficult to work out which player might have an advantage. Just before the final time control Adrian had lost (or sacrificed) a pawn but seems to have lots of compensation, in fact the game is still difficult to call, with all results still possible.

So we could still bag all the points, it looks as though we are on a roll - adjournments permitting.

The match was played under an extended time limit of 3 hours at the persuasion of the St.Albans captain. This, as we found later, has the drawback of disturbance as other games finish and sets are cleared away. The second session is also going to be rather short at a maximum of just 2 hours.

The three adjourned games all ended in Hemel victories but all by different means. Phil traveled to St.Albans and finished off his opponent. My opponent failed to show for the resumption and later resigned. Adrian's game was finally resolved at the Herts AGM in his favour after his opponent failed to turn up to play on, and then failed to give any reason why.

HH2 vs Hoddesdon 1 (H) - 4th April 2004

Steve Weston reports:

Although scrapping with Letchworth 1 to avoid relegation, the Hoddesdon side is actually quite strong. In my view they played a pretty strange board order, not only in this match, but also in the earlier game against them at Hoddesdon. On that occasion it was explained to me that their strongest graded player was not playing on board one as he had a cold. It must be persisting! When Howard and I played for Hoddesdon, Savanhu played above all four of those who played above him here!

Adrian took full advantage of what he described to me as Dominic Allen's "hara-kiri" on one. On two Ian stood in at the last minute and stood equal with Turner (176) at full time. On three Adrian gave up a piece for a pawn, and at full time things looked pretty grim. On four Rod smashed Rughwani, winning queen for rook and minor piece in a tremendous attack. On five I "trapped" Savanhu's queen in a Dragon--but in the end it mated me!

A deal was done at close of play whereby Adrian ceded on three in return for a draw on two. Very well done Ian Hall.

HH1 vs Watford 2 (A) - 19th April 2005

Steve Law reports:

Before we arrived it was still possible for us to be relegated, but this option was soon removed by the news that Watford 2 had failed the previous evening to gain an extra point from St.Albans. That was the main highlight of the evening as we proceeded to play as though it was us that had been relegated. Early stages saw us worse in at least a couple of games and no better than even in the others.

Howards game looked as though it could collapse in short order from the opening, saying that the opponents king side pawn storm was definitely very double edged. Howard defended carefully and with the opponents increasing time trouble managed to pose to many problems, which saw Howard the victor.

My game was always difficult after my pawn offer was declined and I had decided that I was not satisfied with playing for a draw. The result was just a matter of the opponent balancing technique and time trouble, neither seem a problem and I duly lost.

The one game which did seem to favour us was Andrew's, who had a nice position from the white side of the Pirc, with good attacking chances, although I knew his opponent is difficult to beat. Andrew again kept time trouble well in check, but as the game progressed the tide turned, but Andrew then came up with an unseen combination which although caused the opponent to panic it proved to do no more than adjust the material balance. When the time control was reached Andrew was faced with an almost impossible choice of moves, he spent as much time as he could and then choose probably the best sealed move. The resulting position was definitely worse but all three results still possible. The day before the resumption his opponent took the easy option and offered the draw, "so as to watch Liverpool-Chelsea", Andrew had no option but to accept.

Phil with black equalised very quickly, and the game never really looked to be heading anywhere but a draw.

John arrived late, just as the Captain was having kittens. The loss of time was not going to help as I knew the opponent like to play very quickly. John steered the game into a double edged position with the black side of a French defence. John came out with a slight plus in the late middle game and reached what initially looked a promising adjournment position. I'm unsure if the game was continued, but the result was a draw.

Not a particularly inspiring performance but another point which could see us in fourth and middle table. One game to go, anyone want to be Captain.

HH1 vs Royston 1 (H) - 23rd May 2005

Steve Law reports:

The final match of the season was for 4th position in the League. We were given a boost by Royston losing a player through illness, Howard kindly stood aside to allow me to play. Being the last day of the season the match was played to a finish to avoid any summer trips to Royston. I lost the toss and early on white seemed to have a slight edge on all boards. This pattern was not to last long, I made a bad blunder followed by a second which finished the game. On boards 1 & 2 the player with the white pieces remained in control and both eventually won. This left just Andrews game, in keeping with his newly found skill he managed his time well and unseen by me scored the point to give us the match.

Overall a very average season by the players as well as the team, at times we looked unbeatable but other times we would have struggled in division 3. Highlights were 2 good wins against St.Albans and another victory over Hertford, but we struggled badly against weaker opposition.
