Accelerated Swiss pairing system explained.

I was asked several players about the pairing system, mainly asking why they had such strong opponents. The Swiss Pairing System with a single section of such vary grades always poses a problem of uneven pairings. The first round would normally pair the top half against the bottom half, this would have lead to 21 one sided games with at least 45 grade points between opponents. So to try and overcome this an accelerated Swiss is used, this assumes that the outcome of a normal first and second round are a forgone conclusion and so pairs grading groups together for the first couple of rounds, in this case 3 groups were used. What then happens is the third round leads to some odd pairings, the players who suffer, and complain most, tend to be those on 0/2 in the bottom of the three sections as they end up playing much higher graded players also on 0/2. Players on 2/2 have less to grumble about so they rarely complain. Looking at the pairings it would have been slightly better to use 4 or even 5 sections for the acceleration in the first and second rounds, this gives a couple of well match games followed by the inevitable slaughter in round 3 and then some normality for the last round. There's no solution without 'fiddling' the pairing to reduce the grading difference, this would be much more complex to achieve in limited time.
