The Capel, Burn and Bunce tournaments were held on the 9th & 10th Oct 2004 at the Rothamsted Experimental Station in Harpenden. The third competition, the Peter Bunce Cup was added this season to try and encourage more players to take part, this was very successful and ensured a very good turn out this year, with 22 players entering the three competitions.
The Capel Cup was a strong event won by Martin Walker of Royston who secured the title for the first time by beating the champions of the previous 3 seasons and second place Venkat along the way.
The Burn Cup had the smallest turn out of only 5 players, which meant that I stepped in to play the spare player in each round with those games not counting towards the Cup as I'm outside the grade limit. The winner, with a round to spare was once again Ian Mutton of Letchworth, with Tom Rixon second, Tom can count himself very unluckly as he beat both Ian and myself.
The Bunce Cup was limited to players below 115, and had a very close finish with any one of 4 players in with a chance at the start of the last round. The 3 way tie was decided on tie break in favour of Matthew Beggs from Little Heath Chess Club, also scoring 3.5 were Graham Williams of Letchworth and Steve Dicks of Little Heath.
Thanks must go to Pete Tuck for organising the venue and in particular for opening the bar to allow us once again to sample his fine ales. This year winner of the real ale competition was Arizona from the Pheonix brewery with Green King's Suffolk ale coming a close second.
